…and it boggles the mind.
Why would the first reaction of some of these people I see on reddit and twitter when seeing fellow employees working in a nice environment, with free lunches, coffee and snacks and other amenities, be to ridicule them and call them unproductive? Why wouldn’t it be to complain about their own company making you buy your own coffee and lunch, and forcing to work unpaid overtime?
It’s actually kinda sad that rather than calling out some of the business owners that run their operations as sweatshops, there’s quite a large percentage of population who are conditioned on lashing out against fellow workers who are still being paid a salary, can still easily lose their income stream (as evident by recent tech layoffs) and most likely are renting a place to live.
Disclaimer: I’m a finance professional in a similar environment, and while free lunch (which is not actually free, you’re earning it!) and convenient office location with subsidized gym are nice, it’s still a non-trivial work that takes majority of your weeks’ time and energy.
