Before the pandemic I had some health issues which gave me a change in my profession, temporarily I’ve been working at a law firm. I’ve seen lots of content worthy of this subreddit, but something today just really got to me.
I met with this nice Korean lady who had worked for many years as a server, she was 61 years old and had to use a walker. There are many jobs which surprisingly will destroy your health, but I was just alarmed how much this low income job had impacted her.
Carpal tunnel both hands, several knee replacements, she shrunk ten inches from her back deteriorating. The list goes on, then workers are thrown into a convoluted mess that is workers compensation. Your only option is to live on the edge over poverty, just to gamble your life on a lawyer who may or may not care about you (thankfully I work for the good guys). The system definitely doesn’t care about individual workers, every step or the process is designed to protect the bottom line of the bureaucracy.
What solution is there for the work of being a server at a restaurant, only do it temporarily? Hell, there are so many jobs like this that are prone to occupational injury. It truly sickens me how much disregard we have for the longevity and quality of life for humans. Everything is so damn short term driven in this world.
