Working on days off

My first job was a part time retail job. No matter what, on my days off someone would always try to ask me to cover their shift. Sometimes I would and sometimes I wouldn’t because I had plans or it was my day off and I was enjoying it. One time my manager texted me to ask me to cover a shift. I was actually out doing things that day and so I said sorry I can’t today. And she simply replied: “it’d be nice if you said yes sometimes.” Wtf?! Why do jobs like that expect you to always fill in on your days off. The food service industry was like that too.
