There's so much wrong with the mass scale our society is trying to run on.
The way I see it is that it's ultimately unethical, hurts the economy, and even bad for the planet.
We are relying on giant fields of crops, on tired land, tended to by immigrant workers, or native workers in another country, who are paid so little as to actually matter.
We farm meats and eggs without respect or regard to the animals, leaving them in poor conditions for the sake of mass scale.
The material goods that we buy are assumed to have come from a sweatshop, and likely did. Including the phone I'm typing on.
Wouldn't it be more sustainable, more ethical, cheaper, and more efficient to have smaller scale industry? To source as much as possible from the local surroundings, and whatever else can come from further away?
For example, I know when making technology there's materials, metals, etc that can only be found in certain parts of the world. That's obviously fine, there's been travel of regional goods exported to other countries since trade began.
But if we took as many processes as we can and localized them, wouldn't that be better?
Individual regions, even towns, can be self sufficient, or nearly self sufficient. It would also create a more natural ecosystem of supply and demand.
So won't it be a good idea to scale back operations to regional, town, etc?
