I took out the game of Monopoly and I set myself as the banker and gave myself all of the properties. I put hotels on each property and owned all the railroads/utilities.
I then called in my family of 5 and asked them to sit down and play with me, naturally they wanted to clear the board and I said no, and explained this is a slightly different game. I explained that my great grandfather left me alot of properties and all the money to buy the other properties. I explained that it is acceptable because this type of thing happens all the time in real life and the law supports it.
Naturally nobody wanted to play, so I had to sucker them in with a few “loans” to get them started. The loans had interest of course.
My daughter rolled and landed on my property and already couldn't afford the rent. My son landed on railroad which was mine and had to pay me. They started getting anxious and didn't want to play. The other siblings followed suit. They were going broke fast.
I explained that if they can just get to the end they will get 200.00 at “Go” for a “tax return”. I also explained if they are lucky enough they might get a random “chance card” that may yield some cash. ( did not explain the pitfall of chance because I wanted them to continue).
I then explained they could also get lucky and hit “community chest” (that I reduced because I felt that people should have to work more for their money and handouts are for the weak.) They were slightly relieved and rolled the dice.
As we continued to play the frustration mounted as one get got sent to jail by chance , one was broke and as my eldest got to “Go” to collect the fresh air of that 200.00 cash, I gave her only 100.00 and explained that it was part of her loan repayment. She immediately growled and stood up.
“DAD, THIS IS STUPID! It's not even fun!”
I said” it is fun for me !”
The other siblings joined in and stated “it's not fair and there is no way that they could win.” They quit. (They didn't overthrow me so either they moved countries or “checked out”)
1 sibling who was a bit younger stayed to play because she said “it was fun to see what chance cards she may get or maybe community chest”.
Her hope and ignorance of how the game really works had not reached her like the others granted she lost in the end. As the banker I was gleeful at the ignorance. As a father and human being my heart sank all over again.
All of this reminded me of EXACTLY where we are in our current system.
Who would want to sit down to this “game”?
That's what it feels like in the real world in my opinion.
Though I am always hopeful , I will never expect someone who has clawed their way to any form of monitary success by sacrificing ,their time , home life, and even health to ever say the game needs to reset. Why would those who benefit from the system ever want to change anything?
