(Apologies, this is written quite poorly.)
I have scoliosis, and had both my hours cut down to 4hrs a week (they said it was because of my back pain), and denied accommodations, even though I had a doctor’s note. (Said accommodations were having a stool or chair at my register. Instead, they decided to do arguably the bare minimum by letting me sit down for a “few minutes” every hour.)
It’s extremely frustrating, and if I’m unable to change jobs it would help so much to have something to sit on so I’m not in terrible pain all shift. Anyways, I was hoping maybe the union could help with accomplishing this.
I wrote this a few days ago, so I’ll update here since I don’t want to ruin my original writings, but they have told me I need to go to the doctor by Saturday and get a comprehensive report of what I can and can’t do, which will be difficult since I was only properly diagnosed semi-recently.
They have threatened to fire me if an accommodation is letting me sit down for a few minutes every hour, which they have now denied and are not letting me do anymore.
I had extreme back pain on Saturday and had to sit down, there were no cashiers but I felt I could not stand for much longer without having to sit at my checkstand (which is disallowed), so I asked my manager to sit down, he seemed fine with it, he’s a pretty chill guy in general, but then the owner, the “main manager” I guess, told me I was causing problems and overwhelmed them (even though I was the only checker there and doing fine since the store wasn’t busy, and when I sat down they brought multiple people to the registers??) when I just needed to walk a bit and sit for one minute because I felt I was going to collapse.
My dad is saying he will contact people with the ADA, dunno how that will work though. For context I am 18, just thought that might clarify a few things. I’m not the most experienced person in the world
