So I work in digital marketing at a small company of 25 employees. Yesterday I got laid off and was given a 30 day termination date. Reason I was told was because the company just isn't getting in the type of projects that suit my role so they are getting rid of the position entirely. What sucks is that I poured my heart, soul and time into this company, worked overtime and not get paid for it as well stress myself out. I'm not sure if this is a blessing in disguise because I felt like I was being exploited.
In addition to my 30 day termination date, they said I have the option of staying on to wrap up a campaign for a client I am on at an hourly rate. To be honest, I'm thinking of not doing that and just leaving on the initial date they set. I felt it in my gut that I was going to get fired due to the lack of client projects in my line of work. On the flip side, I felt a sense of a toxic environment happening so perhaps this came at needed time for myself mentally. While it sucks, there was a sense of relief as well.
I managed to score two interviews before this happened that I have on the calendar. I feel like in my next role I have to be very selective as to who I choose to work with after the crap I've gone through at this company. I know my worth and I just don't want to choose to work with anyone just because of the damn money. If I don't find work within 30 days I need to apply for unemployment.
Has this happened to anyone before? What are the right steps to take after getting laid off?
