“You didn’t have a leverage then”

I work in a pretty niche industry. The kind that if you go to linkedin and see a stranger in your circle, they are my second or third degree connection. Everyone knows someone you know. When I was hired, my salary was $60k. I took on a lot of responsibilities than anyone in my position, my results were 5-6 times faster than my counterparts. I was a manager, customer service, technical advisor and coordinator in other areas. I at least was working a 3 person job, better and faster. Even VPs of other departments noticed this and gave compliments to my boss. I did receive a small bump when the new year started (cost of living, 3k).

I asked for a raise when my first anniversarry was approaching, my boss asked me how much I was looking for. I said 15%. I got about 10% and my salary now as $70k + 10% bonus + other quarterly bonuses if my company meets their quota

I loved the culture, perhaps the best culture I've ever had in my professional career. Everyone was doing their thing. I just took on more than what I initially signed up for. I did this mostly because I truly care about my work and I wanted to prove myself that I'm an asset.

Shortly after I got my raise, I was approached by a bigger company in our industry. Similar title but bigger responsibilities (managing a team of people) but this company is one of the big boys in my industry (think of versace if you work in fashion industry). Meaning, having them on your resume would look good for your career. They offerred me 110K + 20% yearly bonus. I accepted the offer.

I was hesitant in leaving because I truly enjoyed working with my co-workers. I gave my two week notice. My boss said he wished I had talked to him before accepting the offer. I said I didn't think they'd match it. After all , they couldn't even give me the 15% raise I asked for. He said and I quote “but you didn't have a leverage back then. You do now.”

My boss talked to the owner, the owner offered 110k but not purely in salary: 20k bonus (retaining) + 90k salary + 10% annual bonus based on my 90k salary.

I decided to turn it down. I would have considered it if they offered me more money or at least give the full 110k in salary.

I always felt slightly unsure if I made the right choice because I did very much love working there and I've always preferred working at a smaller company than corporate but after joining this sub, I know I made the right choice.
