Heya people. I joined this sub sometime ago, but this is the first time posting anything to it. If there was ever a point that I need the support of the r/antiwork community, it's now. Here's the current scenario:
I am 29(M). I was unemployed from my prior job of 7 years during the point when the pandemic struck. Finally, late August of last year, I landed a job as an Accounting Clerk for F&B Audit at my present workplace. This felt like a reasonable step up since I had been working in hospitality previously. After a few months of doing things well there, I was offered an Accounts Payable position (this was showcased as more of a swap of duties rather than a promotion at the time). Things went well in this new direction until our Accounting Director announced his retirement. As a replacement, he hired the person who was Finance Manager at the aforementioned location I worked at prior to its closure. I was less than thrilled about this, as she had always brought H.R. down on me for stupid things (having colored hair, wearing shoes that weren't black, etc.), but I agreed with my Supervisor that we should give her a chance.
It was after this point things started downhill at a sudden haste. First, corporate came down on our location, as it seemed that the previous Accounting Director (as nice as he was) was fudging the numbers on his reports to them to keep things balanced. As a result of sudden nonstop prodding from corporate to get things in order, our new Accounting Director decided that she needed to ramp up the productivity of our department and began micromanaging EVERYTHING. It was only after enduring several months of this (naturally causing everyone to fall FURTHER behind in their individual tasks), that I was first on the fence about quitting. This was about the end of August, this year (which is also when we first began losing people).
Before I could hand in my notice, they actually bit the bullet and gave me a reasonable enough increase to my pay that it was nearly worth enduring the B.S. being heaped on us. I thought this would be okay, as the Director kept on insistence that we “just” needed to catch things up and everything would calm back down again. This insistence only kept up until about the beginning of this month. At this point, we have been more or less told directly that things “will get worse” since it is year end. This is on top of some general grievances that we have had for some time, that nothing is being done about here (included most that came to mind on a list below).
This month, I have been submitting applications around to places while awaiting further progress on my USPS job app (as I already have had the fingerprinting and should be at the point of the background check). I really, REALLY just want to put in my two weeks, but I am a pretty anxiety-driven person. This means most of the stress being dealt with from this job had culminated in puking, loss of sleep, and splitting migraines. I've tried bringing all these points up to those in my life for moral support, but its been a mixed bag. It kind of makes it feel like the mental toll and physical damage being taken from this job aren't worth it to others if they've “dealt with worse”. Also worth note, I've got a reasonable level of financial backing that should last while I am in transition to my next job.
So, with these circumstances, do people think I ought to hand in my two weeks to lessen the mental burden (possibly using some nest egg money to sustain the interim), or wait yet longer while hoping for a positive response first (I would like to have the next job lined up, but this is just becoming unbearable)?
TL;DR: My workplace had become an utter nightmare thanks to the current Finance Director and corporate. It has begun to very aversely affect my physical and mental health, plus I have some financial backing while between jobs. As such, should I put in my two weeks or deal with the immense strain while hoping to hear back from other places I've submitted applications to? Hoping for some support from r/antiwork since those close to me don't seem to care much…
Current Workplace Grievances:
-Despite the HEAVY amount of printing that we do in accounting, we have had two copier/printers broken down for over half a year while we all have had to share a single desk printer between the whole department.
-When they FINALLY got us a “new” copier/printer, it turned out to be an obvious refurbished model that broke down almost immediately.
-Every time a person quits, this Director seems to think that she can magically divide the job up among whoever is left and that everything will still be done in the same timeframe.
-There is nobody to complain to above her, as she immediately got all buddy-buddy with the new VP corporate sent over as well as the Regional H.R. head.
-A LARGE majority of my work is invoice entry, which requires department heads to send me approvals for payment. MOST of them never even bother to reply.
-Our I.T. is so backed up with tech issues, it can take DAYS to get help with setting up employees on accounts needed to do their jobs.
-My supervisor can't even help me as she has been so overloaded with work that she has felt like quitting.
-The director seems to think it's perfectly fine for people to be coming in at 4 am and not leave until 6 pm (which I myself have actually done a few times now).
-At this point we've hired three temps total to “fill in where needed”, one of which has been sick 85% of the time, one of which is always selling real estate on their cell phone rather than the job they're being paid to do, and the last of which was overworked and had to leave due to personal issues.
-EVEN with ALL OF THE ABOVE, they still knowingly continue to push out the only people left here…
