Why don’t we just go live like ermits in the forest or something if a job’s only function is to barely survive?

So if 70% of us live paycheck to paycheck, aren't able to save money, and just work 40 hours or even 50 hours a week to be able to survive, to pay for our food, electricity, rent, cars, student debt, medical debt yada yada yada…why the hell are we even working? I'm not even American (I do have some student debt though), I'm Eastern European (the median salary's several times lower, but then again so is the cost of life), but saving money is barely doable as well where I live… …So if I have to work until 65-70-75 years old JUST to be able to survive in society and then try to retire, which might not even be worth doing in the future, why do it? Why wait until I'm in my seventies to hope to start living a life free of work, free of stress, free of all…

Why do I fear just saying goodbye to all this shit and actually go and live like an ermit, why do we all?
What do we have at the end of the day, when we go back home? Video games, television, drugs, pizza, sex here and there, alcohol, and that's it. Yeepee ! Sounds like it would be possible to get by without those no?

Sounds a lot tougher, but also a lot like what life is supposed to be.
