Month: March 2022
For the past several months I've worked at a movie theatre because it's the only place that has even looked at applications. Never stopped applying to other jobs because 14/hr is horrible when a living wage in my city was 24/hr back in 2015. Thankfully I'm still living at home so I don't have many expenses. On average, they've given me 10 hours a week, no matter how often I requested more. I also tend to get more hours than most of the people working there, and am often working the concessions stand alone for hours at a time. I would also continuously be scheduled for 60% more hours than I actually was able to work, because on closing shifts I'd generally be out at least 2-3 hours before the scheduled time, so there would be weeks where I am scheduled for 16 HOURS and am paid for 10 after…
If you’re sad, go buy some donuts…
Just heard a feel good puff piece on NPR about how the pandemic and now the war in Ukraine has been so hard on everyone. So some school kids started a phone hotline to offer advice to cheer people up, and this was one of the sound bites. But that's how NPR ended the piece. That's the best we're offered. Feeling down? Go spend some money on empty calories. Fuck me late stage capitalism sucks. Just remember… If you're sad go buy some donuts.
I get that there are some places that could go out of business, but there are other places that are thriving! For example, instead of grabbing lunch at the Chick-Fil-A near my office, I'll order delivery from a Chinese restaurant near my apartment when I'm feeling like a low-effort lunch. Also, the benefits (health benefits of being able to cook food for yourself when you like, take a nice walk or bike ride around your neighborhood in the time you otherwise would have been commuting, less stress, better work/life balance, benefits of not using as much gasoline, etc.) seem to far outweigh the negatives, from an individual AND community perspective. Is it just that he's prioritizing commercial real estate friends? Is that really enough to try to disrupt everyone else from living their preferred lifestyle?
I started a new job a few weeks ago and my boss has been a disrespectful ass. I want to quit via email before Monday and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what the email should consist of. Not looking to burn any bridges in my industry or tell him off. I just don’t want to get in too deep at this job to where it is an actual inconvenience for me to quit. Thanks!
