Question for you all…
Hi everyone, So I'm a Residential Support Coordinator (basically I'm the supervisor) for two adult group homes in Portland. Our homes support people living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. I have a shift that's 16 hours Fri-Sat from 6am-10pm, and I've noticed people get really excited about the idea of working two days a week, having full benefits, etc. What actually has happened is someone gets hired, is stoked for a month or two, and then suddenly burns out. I consider my primary job to be keeping my staff feeling supported, not burned out, and feeling confident to work autonomously. I really care about them and am really sad about the recent loss. Obviously I havent given much detail about the care supports, other staff, what it's ACTUALLY like to work under me. Typically however, we have the highest staffing of all the homes. Our recruiter is a fool so…
I had on over the phone interview 2 weeks prior and the manager said i was gonna meet other supervisors over zoom. The interview time comes. I was so stressed and worried and wanted really to get the job and practiced interview questions. The interview starts and there is only the manager i spoke with and one other supervisor, no supervisors. The same manger asked me the same 2 question i answered over the phone. “Why do you want to join us and speak about your work history”. Then they asked me if i had any questions for them. They other supervisor just sat there quietly till the manager pushed them to ask. The interview that was supposed to be 30min ended in 10 min. Most of it me asking them to show that i have interest. Like they at least could act like they were are interested. Ask some…
Emotional blackmail for overtime
While we’re all busy working, I have a manager that comes around and ask us if we would like to do an overtime shift. Generally it is to replace a sick call or there’s been a change in demand. This is perfectly reasonable to me. What I do not think is reasonable however, is the way my manager goes about it. When people decline to do overtime she says stuff like: “Oh you don’t want to help out your team?” “Okay that’s your choice, but it’s not fair on the one or two people who are always having to do the overtime.” Sometimes I just say no to spite her manipulative attempts to make us feel bad. I feel like there are so many things wrong with this situation. For example, why don’t you hire more staff, why don’t you stop contributing to a toxic workplace culture so people want…
Being talked down to
When a “staff educator” at work mocks you when asking for help, and just has an overall condescending attitude in general, how do you respond to put them in their place as to not repeat this behavior? I had to talk myself down from losing it the other day on this… upper mgmt nightmare of a person, and don’t know if I can again.
She’s always been a micromanager. But this time she’s gone too far. She’s telling me I cannot leave work for lunch. I clock out for lunch. My time. Most times I go to my car, we only get a half hour. I can eat and smoke in peace in my car during my time. But now she’s telling me I cannot leave property. I got her to say so in e-mail. Should I forward it to HR, for them to correct her? Or hold it in my just in case/need blackmail file for later when needed? Clearly I’m going to continue doing what I like on my time and she can eat a dick.
This sub is just a pressure valve now.
This sub has been manipulated from an AntiWork/Workers rights sub to a steam valve for people to vent and get validation rather than organize and put an end to the oppression of workforce fuckery. The elites let us have our place to bitch and release the pressure so it doesn't build something dangerous and explode in their smug little bitch faces. Nice job corporate shills. Doing fucking excellent at keeping the workers of the world in their place.
Goodbye to unfair employer
I was employed by the same company for 27 years. A few years ago I got an email from my boss during my vacation, “call me as soon as you can”, I called him up and he told me that his new boss had decided to transfer me from my 10 minute commute location to one 45 minutes from my home. The reason was, “he felt with your experience, your current location wasn't enough of a challenge”. I asked if I could refuse the transfer and he said, “you could quit.” As I had a family to support, that wasn't an option so I returned to work but insisted to my boss that if I was spending more on gas and wear and tear on my vehicle to come to work that I should at least be compensated for that. He said it sounded reasonable and he would take it…
