Suggestions for being petty about RTO

So, I'm one of the most vocal employees that supports remote work. I have never worked in the office since I was hired remotely. I was put on the spot in a meeting yesterday and was selected to LEAD the “Engagement Committee”, specifically surrounding RTO and getting people to come back to the office. I don't even plan to go to the office myself, which is part of why I think they chose me. So how can I make this work for me and everyone else who thinks RTO is pointless? My first thought was to spend the first meeting highlighting why working from home is a good idea and the successes we've experienced while working from home. I've also thought about creating events that are just an excuse to not work for a few hours, not something where people just drop by and go back to their desks. I…

It may now be viable for companies to make money from letting their employees work for good causes – is this the way we can finally make jobs more meaningful.

Conventional wisdom would say letting employees work for charities and good causes is a massive resource drain, but that has been dramatically changed by remote work. It's now viable to fit blocks of 'micro-volunteering' into normal day-to-day schedules without leaving your desk. More importantly, there there are increasingly common business activities that: A: Can be replaced with impact alternatives with relative ease B: Where the impactful alternative would actually provide superior value For business activities that meet the above criteria, there isn't even a time-cost to volunteering, because it's time that would have been spent on the activity anyway! The two most obvious examples are: Replace traditional L&D activities (i.e. useless seminars/workshops) with real-world (remote) training where employees solve real problems for real non-profits. Replace the fictional case studies and tests in the hiring process with real-world (remote) equivalents that allow candidates to solve real problems for non-profits. I have…

Boss is harassing me to come back to work after my accident

Got into a moderate fender bender witch flaired up my back injury. The work week started on wensday but my doc told me to take the week off. Now this week it's really busy (working in a kitchen) and instead of checking on me he is asking if I'm coming in today..

It’s not enough to just simply “not mind” your job.

They want us to LOVE working. Not because they want us to be happy at our job, but because they want us to overlook that fact that we're being exploited. They want us to love work so that they don't need to make any accomodations on their part to keep us as their employees. I don't mind taking care of my other adult responsibilities: cleaning, errands, etc. I don't LOVE doing them, but I still do them because they're worth doing. It doesn't take much to make a job worth doing.

This sub needs to wake the fuck up to reality

I am staunchly against the current corporate structure, the low wages, the lack of benefits, the total lack of regard for the working class. However, this sub has turned into a conspiracy theory forum for people who think corporate America is in on a scheme to destroy the working class by any means possible. If we want to make changes we need to be realistic. Screaming at the sun about some strawman in a pinstripe suit is not going to get us anywhere. The reality is that most companies’ structure goes as follows: Shareholders demand to see increase in profits in anyway possible. They want their money to grow. Executives who never meet the working class employees devise plans based on numbers, not humans. High level managers are given the plans and told to execute them. Mid level managers are relayed the plans and sometimes the high level managers come…

Just watched the incredible 2015 documentary “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom” – what chance do you think the American youth can do the same?

A truly inspiring watch that shows the power of a collective movement. It is time we moved past our keyboards … Edit: If you want to watch it too, it is on Netflix worldwide

I think I was wrongfully terminated and I don’t know what to do

Apologies for how long this is about to be or if this isn't the right place to be posting. I want to include as many details as possible. Basically I was a waitress and I have Mondays and Thursdays blocked off on my availability so I am available to work 5 days a week. I am moving soon and wanted to pick up shifts so in the app we use for scheduling I was trying to figure out how to work the “auto shift pickup” where the second anyone releases their shift so they can't work, I would be the first to try and cover that shift and from there, management would have to approve it. On Monday, I accidentally activated it whilst trying to figure out how to work it and it had me pick up a shift that night. I cancelled the shift pickup immediately so they could…

Manager leaving me on delivered?

I texted my manager two days ago asking him to reduce my hours, since I've been very stressed trying to juggle school and work (im 19, first year at college). however I haven't heard anything back from him. one of my coworkers had texted him and he replied back immediately, so he's definitely ignoring me. he has been known to be petty and ignore people when he's upset, like recently another one of my co-workers mentioned she was planning on leave (due to family problems) and the entire shift he did not acknowledge her. what should I say when I come in today for my shift and see him? im scared he won't even bring it up and ignore me the entire time im there. what if he tells me it's not possible or begs me to reconsider? we're very understaffed so he does need all the help he can…

Can employer change accrued leave payout policy for time already served?

Using round numbers for simplicity. My office has 20 days of vacation leave per year. Days that you don't use carry-over to the next year, with a maximum number of accrued dates based on years of service. When you leave the office, you are paid out 100% for the days of accrued leave you have carried over but have not used. Pretty straightforward. So let's say that after 2 years you can carry over 10, after 3 years carryover 15, after 4 years carryover 20, etc. With a maximum of 40 days accrued leave in years 8 and beyond. Management is proposing a change. Accrued leave is being abolished and we would move to an unlimited leave policy with no leave accrual. That is perfectly legal – they can do whatever they want with policies affecting future compensation. This post is not about the change. That policy is bullshit, but…

Quitting job, need advice…

Hello all, need some advice. I am in my current position since November. I moved from Atlanta to Charlotte to take this position. After 10 weeks my employer took my GM position and demoted me to Director of ** essentially overseeing production in the construction business. This came after adding a Sr VP position that is overseeing the branch. I feel like it was a little bait and switch. I had no write ups or warnings. I believe that they are positioning themselves to be acquired and wanted to have somebody with a better pedigree as a leader. This also came with a salary change from 125k to 80k. This takes me back 10 years salary wise and the new position does not challenge me. So with that in mind, including a toxic culture and poor leadership, I will be getting a new job. I have 2 good interviews tomorrow.…
