When to put in my 2 weeks?

So i just landed an awesome job. It’s been a long 6 years at my current company, lots of stress, little sleep, and not enough pay. I just got a verbal offer from this new company and waiting for them to send me the formal offer letter. They already told me the pay. It’s a very popular corporate company and they said they are processing my formal offer letter. This should be finalized by the end of this week! The HR person was super nice and suggested that I pass the background check before I put in my 2 weeks. I am dying to put in my 2 weeks. Is there any reason that I should not tell my company once i sign the offer letter? Should i wait until after I pass the background check? I know for a fact I will pass my background check lol.

Quit a well-paying job at Hilton.

I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years and finally got the coveted General Manager position. Turns out, this particular company expects the position to work 80 hours a week, be on call 24/7, and coddle incompetent managers who are incapable of guiding operations, let alone employees. They were hired or promoted into their positions without having the necessary skills or experience and the failure was inevitable. This is endemic in the industry right now and it is hard to blame people placed in these positions. I blame the company entirely. By the way, it’s not Hilton‘s fault, the majority of their properties are franchised and operated by various property management companies. Leaving the job wasn’t easy, because I care about the people working there, for the most part… a few bad eggs. Higher wages and not promoting the wrong people into positions out of desperation could…

“Substantial” raise?

Curious what one would consider a “Substantial” raise? If you are making, let’s say, 20$ hr or even 30$ hr. What do you think of when your boss says you have a “substantial” raise coming your way? Edit: Wow, y’all are all over the place. There’s a range of 3-20%. If I’m make 25$ hr and get a 3% raise, that’s .75$ more an hour and come out to an extra 1500$ a year (not even a months worth of rent for me) or 20% which is an extra 10,000$ a year (which pays for almost half a year of rent.) I go from not paying rent to buying a house in a year. Which is it? if anyone wants to put some bets down for what raise I actually get next month, I will update when the raise happens. I make 25$ hr now, you got be exact with…

I want to cry thinking about going into work tomorrow

Im a preschool teacher in the best case scenario. I work at an amazing private preschool where management cares about the workers, I am paid pretty well for a teacher (14.75 an hour) and I get to work with one of my best friends. And yet I am so burned out and anxious. I love the kids I teach but its so so hard (theyre 2-3 and a lot have new younger siblings). I dont feel good at my job. I want to go to college to do something else but I cant afford it at all. I have a terrible low back that makes many days excrutiating. I just want to cry. This isnt what life should be. I was actually excited when i got covid because I wouldnt have to work. Im so so tired and im only 22. I know I dont want to teach after this…

Fellow coworker after 8 months of work got a 1% raise as his transition from temp to full time.

My boss is getting a stern talking to tomorrow. I am absolutely not accepting all his work being worth a 1% raise. Wish me luck.

Deciding whether to give notice

Got an offer for a new gig. Current job has an inconsiderate boss who micromanages my travel time (can’t take a 11 am flight, I’m wasting company time, I have to travel as much as I can during non working hours). I’m at a Director responsibility level and own a multi million dollar IT budget, mind you. In addition, they made me use vacation time to permanently relocate to our other site 11 hours away. Knows we’re short handed but is of the whole well I’m here until 8 pm mindset so it’s fine if you constantly work extra hours for now. Oh also your manager deadlines still exist and can’t move, even if you have to help with Help Desk tickets because we’re short handed. Questions me working remote, even when my team is all on hybrid schedules except myself. Had to use vacation time to support my wife’s…

Some fun math for you

Big Macs have increased in price by 40% over the last 10 years while inflation has been 18.7% over the same time period. The average hourly McDonald’s worker in 2012 made 9$ per hour. The average is currently at about $12 per hour, or a 25% increase over the same period. Adjusted for inflation, that $12 an hour is worth roughly $9.76 in 2012 dollars, or an 8% real increase. So Big Macs have gone up 40%, with 18.7% explainable by inflation and another 8% explainable by wage increases (if you believe McDonald’s really can’t afford to increase wages an average of .8% per year without raising prices) That still leaves 13.3% of the price increase unaccounted for. Prices are rising faster than wages and inflation can explain, it’s greed that’s causing this not trying to increase the minimum wage.
