From what i have grasped on this sub, american work culture consists of exploiting the lower class massively. In germany there is a state department called hartz4 which pays people who are unable to find work or disabled, there are a lot of people needing it and some people exploit it to not have to work. If an employer calls an employe off shift the employe has the right to not awnser, and if the the boss fires them for it the former employe can sue the boss for it. Overall workers rights seem to be nearly non existant, having nearly 2.3 million people out of 300 in forced unpaid labour sounds like slavery to me (prisons). What I see is people working and not getting paid their fair share, which to me should be at LEAST an living wage. How did this happen? We talk a lot about corporate greed but what is that? At the end of the day the real devils are the wallstreet/financiers. The ones who make money by just having money. Making rich richer and poor poorer. To make the rich (or shareholders), richer, the companies in turn take from the workers. So really if you think about it, it’s the wallstreet stealing from you. To really break from this cycle, I believe we need to overhaul the financial system.

I feel stupid for this, but I'm in college and would like to get a job. I want to be able to make my own money, I want to feel useful outside of class, but most jobs near me require 8+ hour shifts. I just don't understand. I had a job previously at Kohls for a month and quit because I felt like, despite being part time and just starting, there was too much work put on me because we were understaffed and I was expected to be capable of everything at the get go despite being open about it being my first job. All this to say I could not stand going more than 4 hours in a shift without feeling physically nauseous and depressed. Not sure that it belongs here but having to write an essay to beg a college to accept you is pretty anti-work. 20 years ago I applied to nine colleges with a 3.6 GPA and a 1420 SAT score and got accepted to only one because my essay was about not knowing what I wanted to do, sleeping in high school because they teach the same thing over again for 10 years in a row, and that maybe college would give me something to care about learning about. I ended up studying English and Psychology so naturally I'm not in either field, and I spent 40 grand on my education to become a salesman who's completely burnt out. I probably had a bright future, but because decision makers at colleges who read acceptance essays chose my future for me I am stuck peddling shit to people who don't want it…

So I'm submitting my holiday times today and this company that I'm with (new position, less than a year) has a reputation of refusing holiday time off with zero reason given. I'm wondering how can I politely but firmly inform them that I will 'be unavailable during X,y,z dates and to allocate my pro rata holiday entitlement to those dates? I've been here around 6 months or so now so I'm well used to them either ignoring emails or trying to wrangle their way out of things so I want to leave no wriggle room for refusal.

Today i just had a coworker attempt to toss my artwork in the trash right in front of me in the midst of some tirade. And immediately afterwards i reported her to management. I have yet to see anything done about the situation even tho the HR lady assured me she would speak to the head of department. This coworker is known to have a reputation for being quite hostile and grouchy but i have never seen her do something this unhinged until now. And this isn’t even the first time I’ve had to report someone at this place i work at. It’s maddening. There’s just something about this place that produces the most bitter resentful people.

I’m 17 and have been working for a company for 14 months. I started at bottom level making 7.00 an hour +tips, but I as promoted 5 months in and now makes good wage for my age. My new position is also much easier and more comfortable. There is now a new GM who thinks it’s ‘unprofessional’ that I am in the position I am in now. I have heard from other managers that he says it’s disrespectful to the employees 3 times my age that I am making 2-3 times their pay. Because of this he wants me to go back to my original position. This completely messed up my life at the moment. I decided to enroll in a big university with the expectation that I can afford to go there. Is demoting me legal? And even if it is, how can I keep them from demoting me.
