Hey, guys! I'm about 4 months into my 9-5, and I've been wanting to take 2 weeks off to travel and visit my family. I'm providing them with 6 weeks' notice but I've only accrued abt 32hours of vacation. So do I ask for vacation time where my vacation balance would be negative afterwards, or do I ask for unpaid time off? Also, I'm most likely not gonna do this but is it better to lie abt the trip being booked? (which is not) or like come up with a more valid reason? it's my first corporate job and I don't know how these things work, I'm also intending to keep the job for at least a year lol… so pls let me know what you think!

I had an incident with the store manager trying to make me do a job that I’m not supposed/trained to do and she sent me home and told me not to come the next day. I can’t afford to not work so I applied for unemployment bc of a reduction of hours. I spoke to HR and they told me that she told them that I was calling out. I informed them otherwise. They told me to report to work my next scheduled day. I reported to work and noticed my employee ID was not found. Spoke to the manager on duty and he informed me that the store manager had fired me since I had applied for unemployment. I left, updated my incident reports and left a voice mail for HR. What else should I do?

I am seeking advice from anyone who has challenged their employer for QOL improvements. I am also speaking with family members on this situation, but I would appreciate it if someone with firsthand experience could weigh in. A little background: my job has been short staffed for a while, but recently it has gotten so much worse. Not only is my mental health rapidly declining, but my physical health has taken a huge hit as well. I have realized in the past weeks that if nothing changes soon, this job will probably kill me in one way or another. That being said, there is a shift that is more tolerable. It is evident here that people dont really want to sacrifice their comforts for a better future. Give most people here a decent job where they are treated with respect and paid enough and they will be gone. Hey, I cant blame you or claim to be any better, but it isnt anti work. The system has ensnared us to such an extent that all most can do is whine on our couches. Only the most desperate are free to do anything, but they are so deep in shit themselves they cant or wont be taken seriously. The few sane and free people are so fringe they are easily dismissed, because nobody else wants to give up their comforts. My team at my job normally consists of four people, including my manager. We lost one person at the beginning of March to a corporate job, and we haven't had anyone to fill the position, so of course the remaining three of us have been working extra to fill the gaps. Even though we are down a person, my manager is still planning to take her spring break vacation at the end of April because it's already booked and it's her last trip before her oldest goes to college and blah blah blah. All I see is that instead of working my normal 5 days on and 2 days off schedule, I'm being asked to work half days to cover the gaps, meaning I will work 12 days in a row while she's gone. I find that in almost every conversation I have with coworkers on slack the sentences or words are punctuated with an exclamation point. I don’t know why this bothers me so much but I’m at the point where I do it too so I don’t seem like the weird one. Why does everyone do this? Thanks for your responses!

…Is what I heard the regional manager say to my store manager, when he complained about his staff getting heavier workloads by the weeks…. I was having breaktime while they where conversing about this. For context I work at the bakery department of a big discount grocery store, 11 hours a day. This I do singlehandedly because having 2+ workers like every other grocery store costs too much. The reason why 1 person is able to handle the department is because many things are automated and prepared beforehand. But it seems this fact gets forgotten by higher-ups, for my workload gets aggravated every week for a while now, without it being low time costing.
