With the first Amazon warehouse getting unionized (hurray!) I did see one comment thread talking about, basically “all companies need a union. Except the police. Fuck their unions” and I didn't really understand why that was?
Month: April 2022
I work in downtown Buffalo, NY just for reference for cost of living. I work in the headquarters of a rather large bank on the Teller Line and we all have to pay to park. There is a big parking lot in the basement but 90% of the spots are reserved for executives so all of us working downstairs with the public have to park and we pay $89 A MONTH to do so and it’s the cheapest option. I know how fucking shitty this is but I’m curious how normal it is for people who work in the city.
I work in Florida, for context. In FL there is no law saying my last paycheck needs to be received by a certain time, unfortunately, but after working at this place for 5 years I saw a lot of employees come and go and their last paychecks consistently get “lost in the mail” (GM has even laughed about this with little air quotes, he's an asshole). I gave a notice but they were difficult the entire time, and even cancelled my direct deposit the day before payday so it would come to the workplace as a physical check. the assistant GM confirmed in a text that it was dropped in the mail last week, but I called Department of Labor in preparation just to get answers and they said wait one whole week and call back if it still hasn't showed up. Yesterday was a week later, nothing. On top…
I just have to say I don’t understand the need for it, join the union or don’t but don’t insult those on the opposing side especially if they’re trying to improve the work place for everyone not just them selves. Needless to say the group of guys he said it were very pissed off at him and straight told him to shut up because he’s talking bs and doesn’t understand the goals of a union.
He explained that his father's company (that he was VP of) was experiencing difficulties with their software being slow due to an ever expanding database of information. Upon inspection, I discovered their database was a mess and their software was garbage. I explained that I would build a new app and rebuild the database from scratch. I did this all the while having a full-time job at a dealership. I should also add that it was “tire season” at the time. This is the time of the year is when we swap winter tires for summer tires. I was the one who pulled tires from storage and put tires back into storage. In a season, we have roughly 220 tire appointments. Basically double that number and that's how many sets of tires I have to deal with in the span of about 2-3 months. Suffice to say, getting home from…
This happened roughly 10 years ago. I was just a young teen and had a fairly size-able lawn mowing business. I took on a new client who only wanted me to weed-eat (weed-whack or however you all call trimming the edge of yards next to fences or trees wherever you are from) around his yard, not mowing. Makes sense, weed-eating is the worst part of mowing IMO so I gave him a quote for roughly 30% of what I would normally charge for the full mowing service. He accepted and everything went well for a few months. Then one day I went to his house to get a check for the past few weeks, and his wife pays with no issue. As I am walking home (all within my neighborhood) this man cuts me off as I am crossing a street between the sidewalk (where you are supposed to be…
Quitting without 2 weeks
I love my actual job and my clients, but my companies management all suck. I’m pretty independent and do my work, keep my head down, get paid well and everyone leaves me alone so I’m happy. One of my coworkers been around for a few years, and was expecting his promotion because it’s time. He got it. Without a raise…..usually with that promotion is a 10% raise. And they gave him zero because they’re trying to control budget even though we’ve never been more profitable. What kind of idiot management does that. He was super upset obviously, but he took the title so he could look at other jobs. He found one. Then he quit. On the spot without giving his two weeks. He’s working on a product that’s brand new and nobody knows, so multiple clients became stranded and now management is scrambling like hell trying to find someone…
