There was a recent popular post about someone berating a manager for not increasing wages or shutting a store down due to a lack of staffing, and while that’s a nice idea, that’s not how managing a fast food or retail chain works. I run one small clothing store with several hundred locations in the US, and my starting wage for associates is $10.00 in a state with a $9.30 minimum wage. My getting it to that number was such a big deal that my boss’s boss asked me to justify the extra 70 cent expense. I have no ability to actually make our wages “competitive”. I cannot close the store without the express permission of my boss, who does not work in a store and therefore can’t be berated by customers like the one who posted today. If I tell corporate that we can’t compete with nearby stores paying…

Fuck doctor excuses
I (25f) called in sick today. I work as a hotel housekeeper and its my 2nd job. I work 7 days a week at this job – we do not have off days. I also work 5 days a week at my other job. I'm exhausted. I have a migraine. I'm nauseous. I know they have a lot of rooms to clean today, but I have never once called in at this job. I've had to pick up other's rooms when they called in. They can do it for me too. What pisses me off is that they want a doctor's excuse. I would be happy to get one if my copay wasn't $150 a visit. I tried to explain to them that I can't afford my copay and they told me “then you better come in today”. I asked them what would happen if I come into work tomorrow…

I am applying to fully remote jobs only for this reason. Disgusting.my boss doesn't even wash her hands after pooping no joke.
I’m currently a senior in high school that’s going to be graduating in 10 days or so, but I’m still not entirely sure if I want to go to college. I’m deathly afraid of the prospect of being swamped in student loan debt and not even having a decent job to show for it. I do not come from a privileged household in the slightest either so I’d be paying off my college tuition by myself without any help, aside from POSSIBLY a small scholarship. Majority of you on this subreddit have college degrees and a job, so I was wondering if you guys think your college degree was worth it and what you would do differently? I’d appreciate if you guys could lend me some of your wisdom!
I have a friend who works in management for a major international cruise company. She told me that based on what country you’re originally from, you get paid less. African, South East Asian workers get paid less than people from the US or Europeans. While she said she did her best to immediately hire people into slightly senior job grades to ensure people get paid the same – she’s only one person in a rotten industry, and only on one part of the ship ops (hospitality) So aside from destroying our oceans, cruise operators are conducting some of the biggest surplus value thievery on the planet and swimming in the misery of others. You can probably guess the operator. They’re the biggest in the world.
First of all, let’s be honest. It’s actually 8-5 (or 9-6) in today’s world. How are we supposed to be buy stuff, get things fixed, go to businesses for ANY reason, if we are supposed to work a 9-5? We’re all working during those times. How can anyone, other than the capitalist, elite, class, be expected to get things done if we’re working during business hours?
