So today at work we got told that we may not be allowed to have our cell phones on the floor due to SOME staff being on their phones all the time. For context I work at a homeless shelter. I said wait that’s weird and punitive and probably won’t help the people who are on the phones all the time get off their phones and start building rapport with our guests. Everyone jumped down my throat and one coworker even laughed and scoffed at me which hurt pretty bad ngl. I just think it’s weird for a job to police your access to your phone? Looking for validation. Bless you all.
Month: June 2022
In the state of Florida, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to withhold a final paycheck for any reason. My previous employer is claiming that I still have photos, materials or documents, but I no longer have access to my work email or any work platforms or drives. They haven't been clear about what they believe that I still have, just a vague blanket statement. What should I do? My email to my employer: “Hi Alain, Can you send me the amount of my final paycheck and my final pay stub. I have not received my final paycheck yet. My last paycheck was directly deposited on Jun 2nd and it has been 27 days since. My last full work day was Monday Jun 13th. Can you please let me know when I should expect my final paycheck?” Their reply: “Hello, I am sorry my hands are tied. According to the management,…
Pay student workers a livable wage!!
This summer has been such a struggle because while I was fortunate to secure a student working contract over the summer, the pay is less than it would be during the fall and spring months. I knew that going in, and I knew money would be tight. But of course, I forgot that my lease renewal (along with a raised rent) went into effect this month. It’s costing me over 100% of what I earned working full time for a month. I worked a second job during the month and even that makes it barely scraping by until I get paid again. I don’t understand what universities think we do during the semester breaks. I’ve been financially independent for my entire college experience, so this has been a constant annual struggle. I am just tired of it!! I shouldn’t be wishing my summer break away so I can go to…
How do I quit my first ever job?
I am a teenager, and three weeks ago, I got my first ever “real” job (I also ref youth soccer so I don't really need the money), which pays slightly above minimum wage in my state (10.50$/hr). My parents pressured me into the job to get work experience, and I originally thought I would like it but three weeks in, it turns out it is taking a significant amount of my time and I am not enjoying it. I asked my parents how I should quit, and they said I should give 2 weeks of notice, but the job is quite honestly miserable, takes up too much of my summer, and I don't want to waste any more of it working. How should I tell my employer respectfully tomorrow I don't want to return? (I still would like to be on good terms with this establishment, and I respect my…
A day in the life of American
I've only been at my job for less than 6 months. I make $9/hr as a preschool teacher. I love the kids, but I hate the hours (4/10s) and the pay. I haven't left because I just don't want to hop from one job to another and still have the same issues. Although I feel like a majority of my issues stem from untreated mental illness, like anxiety and/or ADHD, or maybe something else. I got denied for Medicaid because I make more than $700/mo. So I'm on the search for health insurance in order to get a mental health screening and see what's going on. In the meantime, I'm not sure what to do. I've been getting worse anxiety at work and I've noticed my moods dipping a lot more often than normal. I could leave this job and work in the job market I'm more familiar with and…
