I had a conversation earlier today. It got me thinking about wealth, and how we build it over time. The market has been shifting towards services, rather than ownership. Housing as a service, software as a service, transport as a service, etc. This is something capitalism seems to favor. When you buy a house or car, that money doesn't disappear from your net worth completely. You're trading money for something that's worth money. Even if is worth 20% less when you move, you keep 80% of what you spent. When you rent something, you lose 100% of what you spend. While owners are adding to their net worth, renters stay flat. It's currently Thursday in Australia. At my work we get paid on Wednesday. I've had one or two situations where my pay has cone in later then normal, usually after a public holiday. Today, my pay still hasn't hit my account. I emailed my manager to ask about it and he said there was a glitch in the system so I should get paid today or tomorrow. I so mad because I've worked 7 days in a row amd can't even do anything on my two days off because I haven't been paid. I might even have to take money out of my savings just so I'm not late in paying rent. Debating if it's time to look for a new job. So they finally tried to get rid of me. I signed a 1099 so I'm not too surprised but let's get into it. I work at a sand plant in Texas I was told on Saturday to clean the top of the 125ft silos I was told it's alot of work for one person and if I needed to take a break take one we had a spill on another supervisors shift and they said nothing until my supervisor went up and saw it I did what I could on Saturday and when I got back up there on Sunday I was called down to help with a certain silo as it was on the fritz. I told my boss (let's call her Karen) I'm taking a mental health day after lunch. I'm out of leave so I would be taking leave without pay, fine, whatever. She then emails me after work hours and says I'm not authorized to leave and that it will be an absent without leave offense (it's not military but it's an actual accounting code that she LOVES to use). Shouldn't matter because you're not paying me either way but go off I guess? This is the same woman who made me go get a doctor's note for menstrual pain. Actually. I emailed her the note, but she told me I needed to give it to someone in person so she could “retrieve it personally.” She wanted me to hand a physical copy of a note that was emailed to me to a complete stranger. I know how this sounds.. and I’m still working out why I care so much! I’ve been in my job for over a year and none of my coworkers said happy birthday to me (a few knew but probably forgot?). Kind of just rubs in that they definitely do not give a fuck about me. The only thing that ever makes work tolerable for me is the people I work with, take this with a grain of salt, but I could be shoveling shit and be happy as long as I enjoy my coworkers. This is my personal view because I can’t imagine any line of work being fulfilling in itself, and I need the human connection and camaraderie to keep me going.
