Question: how will the labor market look in 5 years?

Over the past 5 years I’ve worked at three different companies, they all were struggling to staff the office completely. Since I started at each one they substantially raised wages, yet still struggle to hire talent while continuing to lose staff. They can’t do this forever , so will there be a harsh downturn where a lot of companies go out of business suddenly? Will they stay in business, operating with fewer and fewer employees while wages continue to increase with inflation? Wondering how this will all end up.

Bait and switch on our internal employee referral program

We were told verbally it would be $500 if we referred an employee. $250 bonus when they start and $250 after 90 days of employment. The official document came out from HR saying $100 after 90 days of employment. Looks like they won’t be getting any referrals from me!

No reviews until I ask for a raise

My team and my scope of responsibility has roughly doubled in the last 18 months. Two weeks ago I finally asked for my pay to be evaluated and brought in line with my work. I specifically explained that while I’m open to feedback and evaluation of my work, that I was requesting an adjustment based on the expansion of my department, not on performance and that I think those are two separate issues. My boss said he agreed I was due for an adjustment. I asked for a lot—a 35% increase. Since then it’s been an exercise in asking me to document every program and project I’ve worked on and how much money has been saved under my management. It’s simply turned into an intense performance review. Today my boss asked for details on a program that is probably the least well-managed in my dept and I just haven’t given…

how to let my employer know

I currently work as an EMT at a company that does the schedualing without telling you. One week I'm full time working Mon, Tues, and Thursday. Next week I'm part time Friday Saturday nights. They don't ask what works for the employee. I just got 3 job offers each paying more than my current job and each start next week during when I'm supposed to work for my current company. How do I tell them I can't work those days and that i still wish to work here part time only on certain days. Thank you peoples

I hate it here. Insurance cost are just skyrocketing

My company just did it’s turn over for the new year with new benefits. These benefits are worse, my deductible for my family is 8000 dollars. While my before tax premiums are costing me 400 a month and it covers nothing. The insurance lady who came to go over our benefits kept stating “ oh you guys have such good insurance! Mine is way worse and I work for the insurance company “ and she was laughing. All while trying to get us to buy into “cancer protection”. Like I’m not even fucking protected if I get cancer!? I might have to stop therapy because now there was a co pay but my insurance got rid of co pays and went to straight deductible unless it’s preventive. So there goes my low co pay to now 75 dollars a session. How the fuck are any of us suppose to live…

What are your feelings on defending yourself to your managers, or any authority at work?

I am in the service industry. Yesterday I was working a double, and at 4pm all the night servers came in, 6 total. I had one table, and I haven't been sat in an hour, and the store was dead. Naturally, I go up to my boss and ask to be cut early, because I have been there since 10 AM. My boss replied, “I will try, but the next time you ask it's going to add ten minutes to you not being cut.” Something turned in me and I was like, “Michelle, respectfully, please don't talk to me like a child, that is something I would say to a kid.” And walked away. Ten minutes later, she said I was cut. I know it comes off as super disrespectful and out of line, but I don't make anything hourly, so it was a massive waste of time to be…

Merit vs. seniority pay

I have a serious question for everyone here. I manage around 65 field employees plus a handful of supervisors. We were more than competitive with wages at the beginning of the year, but obviously the real world is changing quick and a dollar just doesn’t hit the same as it used to. I’m actively bumping people up this year to make up for it, but I have some middle-tier people asking for more money just because they been at our company longer then some other people, doing the same job. Is that fair? I switched us to merit based raises 3-4 years ago, mostly to attract new talent. Nobody wants to do a job they should be paid more to do, just to wait for the yearly maybe-pay-raise. What do you all think? Should you get paid more just for being at a company longer than someone else? Or should…
