When I was 16, I started working at a family-owned restaurant as a waitress where I made a little above minimum wage. The family collected all my tips, and I never saw a cent. I did not realize it then, but they broke the law. Diners would tip 20-30% on my excellent service as I worked there loyally for years. I only made it 6 months at the worst job with the worst business owner I've ever worked for. I needed the money so I didn't quit, but he did me a service by firing me. When I joined this dude claimed the business was expanding because they opened a second location. But all he did was rent a warehouse to move the production part of our job to, while keeping the office duties in the main building. The reason for this is something called “anchoring”. The first number given in a negotiation always ends up being the starting point for that negotiation. Let’s say you make 100k but you’re due for a COL bump in 2 months. If you tell them you make 100k, your offer will likely be 105k-110k. Not enough to justify moving. Also consider that even if you get 115k-120k (these bumps are becoming less frequent), things like the health plan and 401k plan may not be apples to apples. If your current 100k job has no out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and a 4% 401k match, but the new job has 10% coinsurance with 8k out-of-pocket maximum and no 401k match, you’ll need to earn roughly 118k to avoid a PAY CUT. (You gotta make 12k to pay 8k out of pocket and you’ll be missing out on 4K in pre-tax money). Shitty healthcare plans…

Company wants to “promote” me
The company I work for wants to make me do more work for the same pay, I told my manager no and his response was “I'm going to need a specific reason beyond you wanting a raise”. The only reason I haven't walked away from this job already is because I'd worked myself into a nice little spot where I do nothing all day and I refuse to take more responsibility without a raise.

I told them it's a great office and I love the environment but they're underpaying their employees and if I can get offered $10/hr more somewhere else just from one interview, I'm taking it. Sorry, not sorry but I don't want to have to live in a shitty apartment my whole life. I'm 27 with a BA and I can't even think about affording kids right now which makes me sad bc that's all I want is to be a SAHM mom but the world isn't letting me.
