i deliver groceries for an app for work rn cause i'm in school and it's decent but because it's the modern gig economy hellscape, the way they evaluate you is letting customers rate how you did. it's a bullshit system cause you can't really control a lot of it — like what orders you take, how well stocked stores are, them being dumbasses, etc. it's also a bullshit system because anything less than 5 stars is considered failure. out of 5. your average rating determines, overall, if you get fired or not if it gets too low. they've also decided that if it goes below 4.7 out of 5 (4.7, the number which is basically 5) you basically get worse jobs to do. it always fluctuates up and down because there's no real way to control it. the subs about it are toxic af because some people totally buy into…
Month: July 2022
Went ahead and detailed the owner of my company's vehicle because he offered to buy me lunch. Went above and beyond, pulled every weather mat, scrubbed every inch of dirt inside and outside, meticulously organized his belongings. The next day he comes to grab his vehicle and takes me out to pick a car up in his vehicle. The entire ride he spends arguing with his buddy about bitcoin and how it's the best form of currency but how he wants to sell all of his before it tanks more. We arrive at the location so I politely enterupt, “Hey boss” before I am rudely dismissed with a hand gesture and told who to see to get the car. Well fuck me for trying to be a nice guy and go above and beyond for some ungrateful price that makes 5 times my salary in a year.
The feeling that this is the last time I'll have money. Every single time I get paid. The struggle to figure out how to use it in the most perfect way so it won't go to waste. Because corporations don't see us as people. We are replaceable and we will get fired if we make one mistake. Even if we don't know its a mistake. Especially with me having anxiety it's so hard to function in the workplace. Any day could be my last.
Customer service is hell. 9 to 5:30, M-F, chained to your desk. Can't have shorter days because you have to wait for calls and chats until 5:30. Can't just “not go to work because it is a hot day and I wan't to be on the beach instead of work today”. (For the last 5 summers every weekend was terrible and the same will happen now too, M-F 30+ degrees and even 40+ with clear sky and not a single cloud, Sunday and Sunday are just 20-22, rain, stroms….). I only make 620$ a month, barely surviving on that. The only reason I didn't just give up is Home Office but still chained to my desk, imprisoned in a building (doesn't matter that it is home). 15 minute breaks twice a day, barely making it out from the flat to feel the sunshine but duty immidiately calls back to suffering……
Do i owe them?
Worked there for 12 years. Underpaid but still a really nice environment. Got headhunted by a place where the culture is basically lord of the flies but the pay is good. Boss is terrible. Former boss a legit mentor and friend. Now this place is headhunting former colleagues. I told former boss before i left that i wouldn't poach clients or colleagues and I will honor that. But I can't stop current new boss from approaching former coworkers. When former coworkers ask about this place i am honest about the culture but the pay is really good, so I expect they will come over same as I did. Do i owe my old boss a heads up on the poaching – if only to say that it had nothing to do with me?
So I am a powersports mechanic
So I am a powersports mechanic for a dealership. We diagnose certain equipment by riding it like the customer would. In some cases this means going 40mph or above. Boss man CEO notices one of us not wearing a helmet while test riding (none of use have ever used a helmet while test riding) and gets pissed about it. Company does not provide helmets, we have to use our own or buy our own (dealership sells helmets). Motorcycle helmets are not at all cheap. I feel like we should be given helmets as it is a safety item (PPE). Is this legal?
I work for a small company that delivers parcels for the biggest company in the world. For a couple of weeks now, our delivery drivers have been getting an unachievable amount of deliveries on their route. I work a supervisor like position and went to the higher ups to ask what can be done on our end to improve the circumstances and I was given some answers. I reached out to my boss and explained what we could do but he immediately shut me down and told me that he does not see a point in coming up with plans and processes to improve our circumstances. I've spoken to other companies on the matter and the suggestions I had, worked for them when they were going through similar obstacles. When I was asked by higher ups if I was able to communicate solutions to my boss, I said no. He…
