Month: August 2022
Lately, due to how the economy is going, the place where I work (huge, famous European company) is trying more and more to milk the employees, with the excuse of war, inflation and “nobody wants to work anymore”, although the profits are record high. I have the lucky situation of having the highest level of education in the entire module at work, at 32 I am among the younger ones and luckily I have my own flat, car and savings. This gives me both a high degree of freedom and options to go to work elsewhere. Most other people I work with are in their 40s and 50s and in the past two years took loans for houses, or have for example expensive hobbies. These people are now under huge stress from management and work more than 10 hours per day, often 12, whereas 8 hours per day are paid…
Least competent candidate gets hired
Ok. So I had two coworkers compete for the same role. One whom I’ve personally worked with and just sucks. Literally. and the other whom I just know work their ass off. Anyways. They both applied for the same role. Got through to the final round. The least competent one got the job. My coworker mentioned it was between them two in the end. Why is it that good candidates don’t get hired? Is it salary? Note this least competent coworker did shit and had to be hand held 24/7. Yet still gets hired because of previous experience they’ve had. The more competent coworker is extremely well at their job and does it with no issues and no hand holding. Why does this happen to good people?
Tethering for study.
Not something I have seen discussed here, But I’m new so what do I know. I have asked my firm to pay for a course, costs about 5k but means that instead of being charged out at 150 p/h i justify 200-250p/h to the firm (get paid $50 p/h) The course is during business hours so I can’t bill during that time and I would then have leverage to get a raise/ move to another firm for a higher salary. they have agreed but require me to stay for 6 months after completing the course or pay the full amount back. All seems pretty reasonable – what do u think?
Penalty for Yom Kippur 2022
The company I work for has a point system, 6 points total for each employee. Once these points are lost, you are eligible for termination. You can loose these points for various reasons, e.g., unexpected sickness, and/or negative work related incidents, etc… I was informed I would loose one of my 6 points if I took the day off for Yom Kippur 2022 (Oct 5th); and Hanukkah is still being discussed. Is this something that my employer can punish me for? Taking off work to practice? Location is PA.
They make no sense. I hate them.
The company I work for has been trying to get me to return to the office a few days a month. I've informed them several times that as I have no vehicle and no extra funds I won't be able to. Spoke to HR to see what could be done and during the meeting they asked me what I was looking for to remedy the situation. My suggestions were to remain WFH full-time or to get a raise to cover the cost of getting there. Along with not being able to stay fully remote, apparently the 5+ billion dollar company I work for has financial constraints that prevent them from doing so. It doesn't make sense to me!
What's the most effective way for me to fight it?
