Company wants me to spend time at home, off the clock, reviewing their policy book and training manuals prior to my first day. Any HR reps have an explanation for this practice? Face value, it’s completely unethical and exploitative. I was excited to work here for experience and networking opportunities, but this disrespect and paltry pay ($11/hr) really dampen my eagerness.

Cops aren’t workers
He told me to keep track of my hours when working there because the first week he didn’t give me a clock in number, uniform, anything. So I kept my hours in my notes. Once I got a clock in, he basically said because I did not clock in one day that I won’t get paid for it. I thought I was keeping track in notes until my paycheck, like he told me to do. Simple, it was a misunderstanding, but I still worked the hours. He then tells me he’s letting me go for an old employee, the day after I ask for my full paycheck.. is there anything I can do lol??
Why do i have to work my whole life to get nowhere i am 19 got a job paying 19 a hour and make more than all of my friends but i still don't see a point. So far i have just been working with not much free time i work about 45 hours a week at a labor job and it just sucks, i want to just stay home and relax. It feels almost useless saving so far in the 8 months i have worked i have made enough money to buy me a computer and a ps5 and now im just saving for college because it cost so much and hopefully i just find something in college i can do and have a good life. Right now im thinking about comouter science just because i heard it has jobs with good work life balance. But i almost feel…
Anyone else job hunting?
I’ve been job hunting since April and it’s awful out here. After months and dozens of rejections and probably hundreds of places I just never heard back from at all, I’m feeling really beaten down. This shit is dehumanizing as hell. Just wondering if anyone else is going through the same thing? Is the job market this awful for everyone or is it just my field?
…even though we claim to have a free market and capitalism is supposed to give everyone the American dream. It’s like our economy is being manipulated to keep people as employees and discourage people from being employers. Or self employed. The way our healthcare system works basically forces you into employment if you want to, ya know, not die or go broke. And for some reason there are extra taxes placed on self employed individuals. It’s almost like it’s that way on purpose. They don’t want the competition. I truly believe that if our healthcare system did not depend on employment there would be FAR more self employed people and more thriving small businesses. If they can keep us down in poverty wages they can avoid competition and retain power. P. S. I realize this is Antiwork and I’m all for that movement. But I genuinely enjoy what I do…
TLDR at end. First time posting, thank you for having me. I am a Canadian who moved to the USA recently for family reasons. I applied to this accounting firm (one of the biggest four in the world) and completed a first interview. The company emailed me after and said to proceed to next round, I need to get an International Education Evaluation completed to ensure I can get licensed in the USA. Okay, sounds fair. Until I found out what was involved. The International Education Evaluation is run by a third company, with a no refund policy (should have been my first red flag in retrospect) – $225 USD. I need to send in my degree ($105 CAD), transcripts ($40 for school 1, $15 for school 2) to this company. The process for evaluation takes 6 weeks. After doing everything above, I sat down and thought about how my…
