Review Day

I've been thinking of this all Thanksgiving break. We had our department reviews all on one day, the day before Thanksgiving. Probably because nobody has had a formal one in two years and a new HR director joined the company and requested them be taken care of. Mine for starters: I really wasn't looking forward to mine as I don't see it necessary. I asked 9 months ago for a raised and was told it's “On the radar”. It was the final nail as I had been planning on my departure for some months prior. I actually have everything in line for my departure in 90 days. Entity, business location, website, Google listing, accounting, vendors, customer lists the works. Well for the good stuff, I was told I have the highest efficiency of any of my peers, the best reliability so on and so forth. Whatever, any rate increase would…

Social security benefits- United States

I’ve been thinking about this… Social Security is supposed to run out of adequate funding soon (I have no idea when, this is said a lot) or so they say. A lot of older people that hire younger people don’t want to pay them an appropriate wage, but also want their Social Security payments upon retirement/old age. I may misunderstand the system, but if they pay people a good amount, and money is taken from paychecks, wouldn’t they get more money into the social security system? I don’t know a lot about the Social Security system honestly, but isn’t the amount taken out proportional to the amount of pay? And I understand that younger people may not get any money because there are less of them, and working lower paying jobs. But in general, NOT ALWAYS, companies/bosses seem to look out for themselves. To me it seems like higher wages…

I have to pay $35 to attend my workplace Xmas dinner

How pathetic. I work for the government. I see where money goes. There's a lot of money, and it goes to bullshit. We are understaffed and over worked and have to pay for this shit now? I'm only going because I have great colleagues, and want to have dinner with them.

My father retired and my mother can’t figure out why he’s so happy

My father retired earlier this year after 40 years in a government job working 10 hour days. He seems to be in much higher spirits, doing more chores around the house, doing more personal projects. The difference in his overall demeanor after having been retired for just under a month was enormous. My mother mentioned off-hand how much happier he's been lately and kind of made it sound like a mystery. Worth noting is that my mother was a stay-at-home mom for a long time, did part time work when kids were older, and has been on disability for a long time. Both parents are good people. This isn't one parent just being an ignorant jerk. Retirement is obviously exciting and more free time is good, but they're blind to the fact that the 40-hour a week system is what made him depressed for decades. Me, my siblings and our…

Not being paid what I was told

So I work at a fast food restaurant that I worked at in high school and now my second year of college. When I was hired I was told I would be paid $14.50 but wouldn’t have the responsibilities of a shift lead or manager, I would be a regular employee with basic responsibilities. Now they are telling me that I am a shift lead and in charge of closing the store by myself, and I looked at my pay stub and my hourly rate is only $14.00 an hour. Is this legal?

Was kicked out after exactly 7 years. No loyalty – no thank you – nothing

Had been working at a small firm for 7 years. Worked my way up. I have a Masters and a Diploma Course in HR and had been the HR guy for the past 2 years. A year ago we hired several new employees – turnover rate is quite high due to boss + the company being sub standard – I actually wanted to leave in 2020 – but stayed because of Corona and because my pay was above average. Among these was one women with only an HS Diploma – and not much work experience. Unfortunately she became the best friend with the bosses secretary and immediately started plotting to get my position. God knows why she wanted it/thought to be qualified for it. Fast forward to this summer – my boss actually gave this women the HR position as my co-worker. I protested and told him that There are…
