Actionable Change

I’m interested in a thread discussing realistic actionable change. Obviously, we all talk a lot about the unsustainable nature of late-stage capitalism but what are the local and global actions people can realistically perform to effect change? Within the U.S. systems we need our younger Political Science aficionados to start running for office. Local office. Mayors, city council people, aldermen, comp trollers. Gerrymandering needs to be halted at local levels and government officials in cities willing to work with the other prong; union leaders. All of you angry at your jobs without unions and planning to quit…have you researched how you would start a union at your workplace? You, especially-over-it worker have the perfect power. If you are fired for forming a union, you were gonna quit anyway and maybe you help hurt that company or motivate your fellows. It is the power of numbers and that comes from the…

Not sure if this belongs here but I need advice based on how many of you likely have experienced all the cons listed.

Job A: Pros: Amazing pay Great experience/resume builder Convenient schedule Cons: Toxic work environment. “We are a family” vibes and no reliable leadership. Overworked/shortstaffed. Job B: Pros: Benefits Better growth opportunities for the long term (Id be making more in 5 years at B than A, where im not likely to get a raise) Unionized Cons: Terrible/inconvenient schedule 5$ pay cut Living in a big city and really want to make my freshly new career out of trade school support that. Which would yall choose? Im only considering B because of A's cons making me question my choice of coming here instead of taking B's offer (I have them on hold) and wonder what would be best…unless I hold down both, which would be inhumane, or leave A for B, but considering itd be unprofessional (I started with them recently and my industry is a small world)

Anywhere I can sell my MacBook Pro for parts?

My company laid me off. They didn’t pay me for the last 10 days of work. I’ve submitted a wage dispute but I never heard back. I do however have my company laptop which is now locked and therefore unusable. Where can I sell it for parts? Two online companies only want to give me $123-150 for it. It’s an M1, I’m sure the parts are far more valuable than $150. It won’t cover what I’m owed and it damn sure won’t pay my rent, which I am now short on because I didn’t get my paycheck, but it’s a glorified paperweight at this point and therefore useless. Before I get a bunch of people telling me it’s stolen property, think of how you would feel if you were laid off without warning and you didn’t have any money for food, and couldn’t pay your rent. that company can ****…

Considering a job offer, but they want me to start before I’ve had enough time to take remaining PTO at my current job

I am considering taking a job offer. They would want me to start in three weeks, Feb 16th. I have 3 days off scheduled at my current job in between now and when the new role would want me to start. This time off was already scheduled and approved. If I give a resignation notice as soon as possible, my current role would only have 7 business days of my work to help transition my duties, rather than the standard 10 business days (“two weeks notice”) the employee manual requests. I don’t want to burn any bridges with this company. I would like to use them as a reference. I would just cancel my 3 day PTO and give the full 2 week notice but state law doesn’t require my employer to pay out PTO. My employer has expressly stated that they don’t pay out acquired PTO unless required by…

Yesterday my supervisor offered my job to my team member. I hate this place.

Rant I have loathed my job for the last few months. Just straight out, not happy. I make do with everything. I come in, I do my job very well and I go home. I started coming in late in December which was something I planned out with a manager that they have since fired. My department had a meeting with me about it yesterday. Gave me the whole “You need to do better on attendance or else” speech, accused me of being malicious and then kept telling me “We really want you here. You’re a fantastic employee. We see all that you do.” Kept reiterating it’s not a big deal. As I was leaving work yesterday morning, I saw my supervisor pull aside one of my team members that he favors, and ask the guy if he wanted to take my position. He stated there was nothing definite but…

I’m turning down interview offers based on low salary ranges. Advice?

I was lucky enough to just accept a job I’m very excited about, but have lots of applications still floating around. Got a few interviews scheduled which I can now cancel mostly because of their low salary ranges. How should I do it? Anything y’all would like me to tell these HR managers I’ll never speak to again?

Sick of corporate schmucks not bothering to introduce themselves and so much more.

Ok, you can have a toxic corporate culture that rewards greed and incompetence, but if you treat people like disposable trash, you can expect them to take it out themselves! Literally have people I don’t know coming up and asking me things that are way above my comfort level. Just because you give someone a fancy title doesn’t mean they can miraculously do all the things without proper leadership, guidance, and gosh, maybe some respect? I literally was told they don’t give a f if we all quit. I’m broken from this toxic fuck. Why are we slaving away so much of our time and soul for soulless corporations? Am I the only one who feels beyond fed up?

Corporate dinner was $2000

Maybe I’m just used to minimum wage jobs, but is a $2000 dinner for 10 people normal in business? Supposed to be building customer relations but that still feels so extreme.
