I'm curious what people here think: can you be antiwork and believe in capitalism? I see many people here who are not socialists or communists, but I think that capitalism is inherently opposed to antiwork values. Capitalism requires exploitation in order to function.
Boss had an attitude
I’m an independent contractor and my boss went on vacation for a week. During that week, I continued to do assistant duties. (It was small tasks, but it still took my time). After reminding them that they didn’t pay me yet, they finally sent me the payment. They text me “let’s get in a call at x”. I usually agree but I’ve learned that as an independent contractor you dictate your schedule. So I told them I wasn’t available and tomorrow at x is when I’m available. They agreed. But it had a condescending tone to it. Now they want to know the tasks that I did. This is my first time as an independent contractor and doing taxes and I wasn’t expecting to pay good chunk of taxes.
FMLA mental health
Has anyone had success with getting FMLA for 12 weeks for mental health reasons without it requiring inpatient facilities? My doctor had recommended FMLA for my awful work environment and at first I was willing to take 30 days but now I realize I just can’t keep doing this and want to do the full 12 weeks. I have Kaiser and I’m worried they will deny.
Please feel free to roast me, as I'm probably in the wrong circle of folks, but I just wanted to understand other people's thinking and learn from other perspectives. Why do people want to end work and what is the alternative? If it's horrible working conditions, poor pay, poor people/managers, poor work life balance, etc., I believe that can all be changed by switching jobs, as there are surely jobs out there that offer solutions to these reasons. I understand that not everyone will have access to these jobs, or they may be limited in volume. However, I think we all have to sacrifice some things for the time being, and bide our time until we gradually improve our situation. My situation isn't perfect and I have problems too, but I recognize that I'm likely better off than most people too so I want to hear and learn from others…
Vacation time, paid sick leave, etc USA
Alright, I am 28, hold a master's degree, and make an alright salary at a decent place with kind people. I received pel grants for my undergraduate. I also have lived and worked abroad thanks to my credit card bonus miles and being cheap throughout my years. I come from a rural area. Anyway, enough backstory. I am tired of my friends and the people of this nation not having paid time off and their employers being unreasonable. I can't think of any way other than writing to senators and a change.org petition (White House petitions are gone) to advocate for what many countries have. I have friends in various parts of the world and they enjoy vacations and aren't worried about going broke at the doctor's office (Asia, Africa, Europe). And yes, I refuse to compare the U.S.A. to Ukraine (no issues with them, but I am tired of…
Feeling guilty and need to hear opinions
I have been with my current employer for the last 7.5 years. I (33M) have just been offered a new position, with a 35K pay increase, in a field I haven't ever been in before. I am terrified to say the least. BUT, I need a change and the salary would help me considerably… I have been the supply chain manager for a small cancer center for the last 6 years. Errr I am sorry, “Not a supply chain manager, but a manager of the supplies” per my manager… Anyway. I applied at a new company, and interviewed 6 times until I received a call and an offer letter from company X. The new company has me starting on March 13th (AWESOME). However, have over 150 hours of PTO that I will be losing because this company doesn't pay out PTO, and will not allow PTO to be used after…
