9-5 isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be

If I had a dollar every time someone said “you should quit your 9-5” “you’re a slave to your 9-5” “you should become and entrepreneur and buy my course to escape your 9-5” I’d have enough to retire and never work again. Unfortunately nobody is paying me for that and I actually enjoy working my 9-5. Now it’s not that I actually like working. This is the anti work subreddit after all. However in my current position I feel pretty fortunate and blessed compared to some of my previous jobs I’ve had. I’ve ran a small online store before. You literally never stop working. Always on call to customers and since you run the business all pressure is on you. Used to work as a line cook doing night shifts. I’d take the 9-5 over the 5-12 any day.

The 9-5 is great for me cause I get to do my work from 9-5 and shut everything off at the end of the day. And the rest of the day is mine to do whatever I want.

Some of the privileges my 9-5 allows me makes it even better such as remote and hybrid work. I can show up a little late and it doesn’t matter. I can start the day at home and then go to the office at noon. I could go in the morning and then leave after lunch and continue my work at home. Thanks to this sort of flexibility I’ve never felt happier with a job before.

Point of this post is to not let gurus or so called experts tell you that a 9-5 job is going to be soul crushing or the end of your happiness. As long as you do something which brings you joy like in my case, IT helpdesk, (windows nerd. Shit is fascinating to me always) you’ll feel even more free than someone who is bound by their own business or is stuck working erratic hours.
