Moment of Truth w/Boss?

Hey, all—I’m a drug addict (including alcohol) who relapsed awhile ago. I’m doing what I have to do to recover (rehab, counseling, etc.) and unfortunately my addiction has been impacting my work quite a bit this year. I work for a very good company—I’m a lawyer working in legal aid, and my firm is demanding but I’m lucky enough to be drowning in benefits. I do good work and get great results. When I’m not fucked up, anyway. Today I got nearly blackout drunk before work. I sent out an email to my office that I didn’t feel well and to let me know by phone or email before they come my personal office.

Then I slept on the floor for a few hours before my boss asked me to go home and take a COVID test. She did not know I was drunk on my floor, just knew I felt bad and wanted to be sure I wasn’t contagious.

Went home, took the test and sent a picture, then passed out on my floor until about 7:30 p.m.

So, here’s the thing: do I tell my boss the truth about what’s going on? I have had quite a few absences this year and it’s getting harder and harder to keep this a secret. I’ve been with the firm over two years and they seem to like me quite a bit, but I don’t trust bosses to act like humans when there may be a threat to the company.

Thoughts on this? I either need to come up with a great lie while I recover or tell the truth and pray, and I’m going to have to do it soon.
