So I've been in my newest job for just under 1 year. Previously I was a restaurant Manager and after 9 years in the service industry, I had finally had enough.
My new job pays much less, but has better benefits and is about 5 minutes from my home. I now have weekends and holidays off. I am not expected to be available outside of work hours and I never get calls or emails at home. It's absolutely perfect for me. Or… it was, until we got a new manager.
This guy is all about increasing sales and because of my previous experience is really pressuring me to “move up” in the company. When I said I had no intentions of moving up and that I was very happy with where I was, he was aghast! He is FORCING me to choose a career path and follow a training plan in order to get to where he thinks I should be.
I have plenty of passions and ambitions but not one of them involve my job. I am happy to be a productive and contributing member of society. I don't WANT anything more. I want to have enough money to eat and read and write and create art and spend time with my family and I truly don't understand why that's something that people find so offensive!? Why are we so obsessed with our jobs like they're a f*cking personality? Why are we killing ourselves for money that we'll never have time to spend and wearing hours worked like badges of honor?
Anyways.. this is just a rant. I'm so upset that my perfect job is ruined and if I'm honest about my lack of career ambitions in future interviews I'll be treated like a pariah.
