So back story, I just left my previous job as a night security guard. It was a pretty decent gig in the beginning but then things really started going down hill when I saw how shit the management was. My husband thinks I should go to the labor board and I just don’t know if there’s enough to warrant it or if they’d just laugh me out. So here goes the list of shit we had to deal with:
1) we NEVER saw the manager or owner. I met the “manager” during training but afterward never saw him again (until I told him I wouldn’t answer my personal phone and he could text me to respond or talk in person. *I’ll explain why later)
2) we were hourly but they automatically took a 1/2 hour lunch off our pay. Didn’t matter if we took it, unless we reached out to say we didn’t it auto came off. If we reached out they’d bitch about how much work it was for them to look through dash cam and body cam footage to ensure we didn’t take a lunch.
3) I personally clocked in 10 minutes early for 3 days because we had meetings with the supervisor (of which there was usually only one) and they reverted my time to the time on my schedule. I had to argue with them about why they did it. They also tried to take 30 minutes off my time when I returned to the home office because they said once we come into the garage we are to clock out (I had been told to wait for supervisor so they could review our reports and send us off. [if we didn’t wait they’d call us on our personal phones after we’d clocked out to tell us the issue and try to have us fix it)
-I was told the reason for this is because anything outside of the “contract hours” with the companies we provided security for had to be paid out of the owners pocket.
4) we drove company cars, one guy slid during an ice storm and hit a curb, they’re requiring him to pay the deductible
5) They said someone had been on the clock for no reason after returning to the office so they deducted 20 hours from his paycheck AND docked him $2 an hour for 30 days.
6) They said I didn’t do a task and they confirmed it via dash cam (I admitted to it – I didn’t do it because I was actively throwing up and then decided to leave without doing the task) this was the first time I’d done something like this, they said they were going to deduct $2 an hour for 30 days. Would’ve been my first write up even.
7) we weren’t allowed to wear hoodies under our uniform (no reason given) but they didn’t provide hats or rain gear and we work in a snow prone state.
8)we had a literal blizzard (temp was negative 15) and they decided we didn’t need to be on “adverse weather” protocol and should be out walking if that task called for it even when it took more than 20 minutes and we were at immediate risk of frostbite.
9) we had to use our personal phones to contact our supervisor or people reporting issues. We were not given a discount or money toward our phone bill.
