hey, i’m a university student who works part time in retail. i’ve had a change on my timetable so that i now have two important seminars on tuesday and i’m not able to work my scheduled shifts on these dates for the next two weeks.
i messaged my manager about this on the 8th, the shifts i can’t do were meant to be on the 17th and 24th. so i’ve given 10 days advance notice for the first shift and over two weeks for the second.
when i went into my shift on the 10th i asked the manager if she’d seen my messages, she said no as her phone wasn’t giving her notifications for the platform we use for work communications. she told me i had to find my own cover for these shifts, that i haven’t given enough notice, and that i should have messaged another staff member to let them know as well so they could pass the message on.
i’ve asked around and nobody can cover them, which i told her. she said that if i don’t turn up to those shifts it would be a written disciplinary. obviously i’m not going to prioritise my part time job over my education, but what can i do in response to being written up here? i feel that i did all i could my messaging as soon as the availability was changed, and i didn’t know she hadn’t seen my messages. i’m really stressed out about this 🙁
