Unpaid Meal Period Laws

Hello everyone! I've never really posted before but I have a question that is really bothering me. Some of the bosses I work with will make their employees take their lunch an hour after clocking in so that they don't have to cover their meal later. It is an 8 hour work shift, 30 min unpaid lunch. Is this legal? I know some states have specific laws, while others fall under federal. My state doesn't have specific laws, so I tried to look for the federal information but it doesn't seem clear. Any answer is appreciated
