Company hired me as independent contractor but expects me to work like employee

I work remote for this company. They consistently assign me work that is expected to be finished same day and often assign things they need within the hour, meaning that they completely control my work hours. Even though I’m only getting paid for about 10-20 hours a week, I’m expected to basically be ‘on call’ for the full 40. If I don’t answer an email within the same day, I get a (often rude) follow up email. Are they taking advantage of the independent contractor role? Should they have hired me as part time and are trying to skimp out on paying benefits?
