Looking for a new job and I don’t know what to do

My current job is completely stressing me out, it is completely draining both physically and mentally and I want to get a new one. However, I'm having trouble looking for one. For one, right now I'm primarily looking for remote work, although that's not all I'm open to. Browsing entries on LinkedIn and Indeed have me worried because I don't know what's a scam and what's not. I've never worked remotely before, although I do have experience with computers, basic programming experience and I've installed Linux, so I feel like it's one avenue I believe would be right for me. IT also sounds pretty up my alley But for jobs I physically go to, I have no idea what to look for, I'm lucky enough to not be working in retail or fast food, but I only have the job I do because I was referred to it by someone…

IT also sounds pretty up my alley

But for jobs I physically go to, I have no idea what to look for, I'm lucky enough to not be working in retail or fast food, but I only have the job I do because I was referred to it by someone who knew one of the bosses. My work history is pretty shabby and I don't really know how to find anything else that is not just retail and fast food, which both of those are by all accounts worse than what I'm currently doing. I say this from experience because my previous jobs were in those fields.

As long as the pay can be classified as “not dogshit” and the workload can give me ANY breathing room to relax on my free time I will take any advice. My current job, as well as retail and fast food just completely chip away at my mental well-being. I cannot stand coming home only to barely be able to recharge just in time to go straight back to work, I feel like my life is being wasted. I have wanted to quit for nearly 8 months and the fact that I can't feels completely debilitating, I want nothing more than to leave my job and take on something even ever so slightly less shit.

Edit: USA, to no one's surprise
I typed this on a whim an hour after I should be asleep so I don't feel like ranting about my current job or what it is tonight. I could go on and on but if someone asks after tomorrow I will provide more details. It is completely unrelated to the kind of work I am wanting though.
