conflicting feedback during job performance – permanent contract denied

Earlier this year I started working for the university as a quality officer. In the 8 months I’ve been working here, I’ve been getting no negative feedback. In fact, people were happy with the work I was doing. Furthermore, I have no real supervision, so I choose my own projects and there haven’t been any complaints- even when I checked with coordinators and managers. Today, however I sat down with the director of our faculty only to hear I was not being offered a permanent contract because all of a sudden there were ‘concerns’. My work was too superficial, they felt I maybe didn’t fit in in the faculty. They decided to open up my job post but encouraged me to apply again. Where was this feedback months ago? Honestly, I feel there is a political play going off in the background to get my out of my position…
