So, i worked at a place I hated for a few months and recently got a better job. Recently enough that I'm still getting a paycheck or two (because schools are really shitty at payroll in a timely fashion).
Anyways, I get a call from the school and they're telling me they screwed up when cutting a final check and they overpaid me by under 50 bucks (apparently some kind of miscommunication about deductions that I was/was not paying into after I had left employment with them).
School wanted me to verify the info they had on file (I specifically did not verify, I danced around it). Told them that I haven't had any issues on my end getting my payroll deposited. They further say that usually banks just help them out with this, but my bank wouldn't authorize their deduction. They mentioned something about the posting date and then a few days later they realized the mistake and tried to correct it.
Honestly, this seems like a fuckup on their end and they're just trying to get me to pay them some money back to go into a retirement fund I'll never collect out of. I'm not gonna bother confirming things with them. Dunno if I should contact my bank or not.
Thoughts/opinions?
Are they being petty and trying to cover their ass? Would I be on the hook to repay them? Can I safety ignore this?
