Like everyone else, I am stuck in this capitalistic hell-hole. I am a dreaded middle manager. I took this job for the pay, like everyone else.
We work remotely – everyone, myself included, gets a lot of freedom. Be available during business hours, get your work done, that's it. The work itself is truly never-ending, but there is a set amount daily. It is not stressful. There's really no client facing positions, nothing critical, no deadlines of any kind, minimal meetings, like 2x a month IF that, and it's just a small group I manage. We don't have any monitoring of any kind. Decent pay, great benefits, like it's a pretty okay to be.
As a “manager”, I do not care when you use your sick time, I do not care if you take a day off or what you take it for. I do not care if you work a little earlier or stay a little longer to give yourself a longer lunch break. I truly understand some days you get more done than others. If you get a ton of work done in the morning and sleep the afternoon, I truly do not care so long as something is done. I get that this is a paycheck and not a lifestyle. You want to do a different job? Great, what are you interested in, how can I help get you to where you want to be? I try to do everything I wished management did *even though I don't have the pull upper management does.
All of that being said, I have one team member who just is not showing up. She has such a great personality and attitude but she just is not doing fuck all lol which don't get me wrong, I FULLY understand, but it's literally my job to make sure her work is getting done. I want to just level with her and be like, hey, this is an easy job dude. What are you doing? Just do the bare fucking minimum so we both don't get our asses chewed out.
I know this is anti-work, and it's why I am reaching out to you all. Any advice on how I can help this person keep this super cushy job? I have tried working with her to restructure her work flow to make it a lot simpler and delegate a lot of tasks out. I've also quite literally taken half her workload. I am at a loss. Previously, I worked in the service industry where it was like Lord of the Flies and we would just scream at each other to get work done lol – Corporate USA is a relatively new monster for me.
