Teaching them early

My daughter's elementary school doesn't have art classes. (The district doesn't actually have any art classes before high school level). So I started an after school art class/ club, where I teach them a little about technique and such, tying the lesson in with the calendar. So last week we celebrated Cesar Chavez day (our neighborhood has a highway named for him on the edge). I found a few short educational videos about his life and work, and we made our own “unions”- the folded up paper chain people holding hands. (I used the library rolls to get reallllly long sheets so they could have a lot of people in their unions!) I explained to them that by standing together, they can make the world a better place for themselves and their children, just like he did. It's not much but hopefully a few of them will remember!
