I’m going to keep my job role vague as it’s potentially outing.
I work for a large organisation within the UK. We are chronically understaffed at the moment. The team I work for has gone from the benchmarked 12 to now 5 of us. People have left for a variety of reasons, but many have commented on the pressures on us as a team from senior management as we’re still having to hit previous targets despite being so understaffed.
So here is my issue. I keep getting allocated work with ridiculously short deadlines. The emails come saying “sorry for the right deadline, but you know how understaffed we are”. I’ve spoken to my line manager numerous times about how unrealistic the deadline have been. I’ve offered to show her my diary so she can see how it’s physically impossible to fit it in. She always declines and starts the narrative of us being understaffed but targets staying the same blah blah so please can you get it done. I reply saying I understand, but that doesn’t help my situation.
I’m just…done? I’ve been set another tight deadline for next week. I emailed back saying it’s ambitious as I have two days off on paid holiday this week and other work commitments in my diary which cannot be moved. I feel like I’m being reasonable but I’m just being met with a brick wall.
