Work at a chain grocery store in Cali part time since mid February of last year. Up until January I had been working 3-4 6 hour shifts a week starting at 10 AM, but then in mid January my boss started giving me only 1 shift a week for 3 weeks in a row.
When I confronted him on the third week he told me my current hours (10-4) didn’t work for the store and that i wasn’t able to adequately get enough done with them. I work in unloading the pallets we receive and working the product onto the shelves, and the 2 deliveries for my department normally arrive at 9-10 and at 1-2.
He told me that it would be better if I started to come in at 6 AM and if I was trained to help out in another (more infamous) department. I agreed as I wanted more hours and set my availability to 6-12, shifting my previous shift back 4 hours. Since then he has been giving me consistently 3 8 hour shifts (6-2:30) and denying my availability requests.
I was going to let it go until the last few weeks, where in the last week of the month I got 4 8 hour shifts, and then last week and this week I now have 2 40 hour weeks.
Is this not full time hours? I am going to confront him in the morning when I go into my shift and tell him that I can only work about 24 hours a week like I had been previously, and that the only reason I worked the 40 hour week last week was that I assumed I was covering a shift. Should I finish out this week with the hours he gave me or tell him I can’t as I do have responsibilities outside of work which I temporarily put on hold because of last week.
If it makes a difference I was hired by a different (much nicer) manager before she left and he took over.
