This was many years ago, but I was super excited to work at EB games as a teen because I loved video games. I really wanted a job there when it was all over so I regrettably told them I was going to work longer hours than I was supposed to. (Instead of 11-3, I’d stay 11-5ish)
My boss took advantage of this halfway through by firing a girl who told me that this job sucked, and made me stay to 7 or sometimes closing. One time a person came in and my boss gave them complete wrong info on a game. The person left her and came to speak to me instead and I could tell it really pissed my boss off because she had a HUGE ego.
I ended up having a funeral to go to in the first month which my boss was fine with. Then the next month I wanted to leave earlier to study before my actual paying job. My boss was pissed the next day when she found out saying “I made a promise” and I “have to treat this like a real job”. I’m literally getting paid nothing and work longer than I’m supposed to anyways so I couldn’t understand why she was upset over free labour. Then my close friends dad passed two weeks later due to cancer and I called my boss to let he know I wouldn’t be coming in tomorrow and she said “Really? A lot of people are dying to get you off work huh”. I had my boss on speaker phone next to my mom and even my mom got pissed off and told her that was rude and disrespectful.
After that I stopped showing up. Already had all my hours. Told my teacher about it and he said my boss called him demanding I come back as she had lots of work for me to do. Crazy how one bad ego can ruin a job.
