My job is one of those companies that thinks giving us free pizza and pastry makes up for low wages. I know this is not that uncommon. Recently we had a meeting where people were talking about what they can do to increase a sense of fun at work. 90% of the suggestions were around having cookouts, having pot locks, and having Chili cook off. Stuff like that. Managers also mentioned how they like to bring in donuts for the staff. The company claims that they focus a lot of energy on employee wellness, but in addition to this looking around the vast majority of our workers are very overweight or obese.
Three years ago when the pandemic started I became a remote worker. While working at home my eating habits completely changed and I was able to lose about 40 pounds.
As of right now I am still remote, my boss knows that I now consider this a condition of my employment as they took my office away. However, there has been an increased focus on teambuilding and agency activities, and I find myself needing to go into the office for a meeting once a week or so, which is honestly OK with me. Except for the food thing.
I get asked a lot of questions about why I’m not eating, why I bring my own snacks, why I don’t want the “free pizza.” I hate it.
Anyone else deal with this bullshit?
