i always see people complaining about the american wage system but i’ve been living abroad in scotland and it is so so much worse

Cannot imagine doing this the rest of my life. I got my first job ever (i’m 17) and was paid £5 which was later raised to £6. i quit a few months ago but it still bothers me so i needed to rant. (had a nightmare about it last night tbh) it was recently raised, but at the time i was working minimum wage for my age was £4.81 = $5.94 how is this legal? there’s even a separate “minimum living wage” that’s recommended but not enforced?? i’m thankful to not have to support myself on a job quite yet, if i did i’d simply die, this was the only job that would take me with no prior experience. i don’t even know where to begin with the owner so i’ll make a list i guess. the owner did not tolerate mistakes. like new people would come in for a…

Cannot imagine doing this the rest of my life. I got my first job ever (i’m 17) and was paid £5 which was later raised to £6. i quit a few months ago but it still bothers me so i needed to rant. (had a nightmare about it last night tbh)

it was recently raised, but at the time i was working minimum wage for my age was

£4.81 = $5.94

how is this legal? there’s even a separate “minimum living wage” that’s recommended but not enforced?? i’m thankful to not have to support myself on a job quite yet, if i did i’d simply die, this was the only job that would take me with no prior experience.

i don’t even know where to begin with the owner so i’ll make a list i guess.

  • the owner did not tolerate mistakes. like new people would come in for a trial shift and when they inevitably made a mistake (someone once made 2 waffles instead of 1) he yelled at them for a whole 5 mins.
  • he was CONSTANTLY watching the cameras whenever he wasn’t in store. one time it was a couple of us on shift and there were no customers for a long time, we’d cleaned and restocked everything and couldn’t think of anything else to do so we started talking for about 3 mins. at which point he called the store phone to tell us off and then texted a list of things to do to our phones. he must’ve started typing it literally seconds after we stopped working it was so long. and it was just shit like “clean this random surface that’s not even dirty”
  • almost every time i was on shift he brought in someone new for a observation shift, which should’ve been the first red flag. i don’t think any employee ever stayed more than a couple months. i was one of the longer ones. some quit after a week. he made one girl cry, she quit soon after and he blamed it on another employee. the longer you stayed the more responsibility you were given but on the same minimum wage. suddenly you become responsible for everyone else and their mistakes
  • the place gets very good reviews; but there are multiple customer reviews saying it was uncomfortable watching how he treated us in store
  • he’d sometimes give us expired candy and act all pleased with himself for being so nice
  • oh and no benefits! was a dessert shop, but not allowed to make an extra pancake for ourselves during a 6 hr shift. buying one singular dessert was worth more than an hour of work.
  • when i quit i sent him a message. he left me on read guess so many people quit he doesn’t bother with the 2 weeks thing

please tell me this isn’t the normal working experience
