I interviewed for a position and the caseload is 90 for a full time therapy job with high risk clients with a high rate of active suicidal wishes and violence. A therapist should not be seeing more than 25-30 clients per week at the very maximum. And for high risk clients they should be seen at least once per week.
Therapists are burning out – and the licensure requirements, training after a graduate degree and endless post graduate certifications we are required to have are murdering our field. It costs at least 30K to get a graduate degree now (additional to what ever you paid for undergrad), and forgiveness is non existent. Every time you near enough experience to go solo practitioner – they move the goal post for providing services and increase documentation, cost and training needed. And you can't get a teaching job in therapy anymore without a doctorate, but doctorates do not even provide therapy anymore – thearpy is now provided by MSWs and LMHCs. So the professors mostly have no actual therapy experience now.
Online therapy platforms are trying to uber-fi our work – to make everyone a 1099 with no benefits and all the liability.
Literally we can't afford to provide therapy – you can't bill insurance until you have an “independent license” and 6 years clinical post graduate experience, which requires an agency to provide specific supervision which most don't.
Therapist and social workers and mental health professionals are literally starving to work in the field.
