What’s to stop someone from lying about their degree?

I don't know if this is the right sub to ask, but what's actually to stop someone from putting that they went to an Ivy league university, or have a masters instead of a bachelors degree on their resume or application? Unless you're applying to a government job or some super old school strict company, I've never seen most places verify where someone has went to school or references anymore? Is this just my stupid view or am I missing something?
