They used WFH as a hiring carrot and announced return to office today.

I work for a large well known company. Been there a 1 and 6 months. I have excelled as an employee, even up for a promotion. They actually reached out to me and asked me what it would take to leave competitor company and work for them and I said “WFH and higher pay.” They wrote me an offer with permanent work from home, included. It was a bumpy start as they were short staffed and did not typically hire external hires to this particular role. Training was sloppily put together. However over time, it became easier and I was overall happy. They began filling the department back up with people with jobs they advertised as remote! Today they announced back to office! Today they announced back to office! But only those 45 mins or less from an office. They used a 3rd party vendor to figure it out. They did not account for traffic, just distance. 3 years or more tenure can do 3 day hybrid. Under 3 years is full time back to office! That’s me! Meanwhile half my team will remain remote as they do not have an office close by. The reason they provided? “Culture and people wanted this.”

What people?! The ones you hired with remote carrot? The ones yo head hunted like me and promised WFH to?

We are shocked. I have a coworker who moved to the area to work the PST hours and has no vehicle as she works from home and otherwise uses public transport. She is required to return to office, an hour commute.

I just spent 3 months in a beta creating new processes for them.

Fuck them. I’m leaving.
