Ex-Employer Wants Me to Pay Back Accidental Payment

Hi all, not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but here goes. I was recently laid off from my job in tech last week and when I started in March I told my employer that I had two weeks of vacation planned already so I would start and then be gone for two weeks. Hi all, not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but here goes.

I was recently laid off from my job in tech last week and when I started in March I told my employer that I had two weeks of vacation planned already so I would start and then be gone for two weeks. Well I was paid my regular salary for those two weeks I was gone and I didn’t notice until it was brought up to me by HR a couple months later. They knew I was going to be gone and I thought PTO would be applied but turns out their PTO policy only allows you to accrue PTO and the PTO days are not given to you upfront which is what I thought was the case when I was hired. HR told me they would adjust my salary to account for the accidental payment but I was laid off before they did.

I was laid off last week and they want me to pay back 14 days of salary for a mistake on their end. Do I need to pay them back? My ex-employer is located in TX while I lived in CA for entire time I was employed. I don’t have the money to pay them back upfront and I’m moving out of state next week and need money for moving expenses.

What are my options here?
