Manager wants us to answer phones. How to prevent this?

I started a new office job 6 months ago. We got a new CEO who keen on providing “rockstar customer service,” and now wants to provide customer service over the phone, in addition to email. I had been exempted, but got taken by surprise last Monday by my manager and was added to the phone system. It's been entitled (wo)manchildren so far and has no purpose than letting people yell at us since our department has no reason to speak to people on the phone. Not to mention that our department is easily a month behind on our work. Handling times will now skyrocket and we'll become less productive, not to mention I now need to work from home instead of a cafe. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a few ideas in mind but curious what else others suggest.
